About the Founder: Andrew Kavasilas
Andrew Kavasilas is one of Australia’s pioneering champions of industrial hemp food and cultivation. With over two decades of hands-on experience, Andrew began growing licensed industrial hemp as early as 1999, laying the groundwork for a modern hemp movement in the country (Sydney Criminal Lawyers, Northern Rivers Hemp, Echo).
He is the visionary founder of Vitahemp Australia, where he has devoted himself to identifying and breeding low-THC hemp cultivars tailored to Australia’s sub-tropical growing conditions. These locally adapted varieties are renowned for their clean profile and “no detectable trace of THC Delta 9,” enabling reliable seed production for licensed growers (cannabisawards.com.au, Northern Rivers Hemp).
Andrew’s influence extends beyond cultivation. He played a pivotal role in the legalisation of hemp seed food in Australia, and has led reform efforts aimed at legalising whole-plant hemp products (including leaf, sprout, and root) for human consumption (Sydney Criminal Lawyers, Nimbin Hemp Embassy).
As a regional advocate, Andrew also serves as President of the Northern Rivers Hemp Association and chairs the Hemp Extracts Group within the Australian Hemp Council\, where he supports whole-plant utilisation and innovative policy frameworks for the industry (australianhempcouncil.org.au, Northern Rivers Hemp).
